Mercy House Executive Director Weighs in on Homelessness

Mercy House Executive Director Larry Haynes discusses homelessness with Orange County Register reporter Michael Mello for a recent article titled “Here’s How a Homeless Shelter Works.”

Haynes believes preventing homlessness is easier than alleviating it once it’s already a problem. Mercy House’s shelters in Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties helped more than 1,000 homeless last year.

“We’re assuming we’re going to be doing this for awhile,” Haynes said. “We would like to see a reduction. We’d like to see fewer people come to the armory, or at the very least not have the same 100 percent come to the armory.”

To that end, he said, when they walk through the door, “We want to say, ‘You’re here. Let’s really aggressively figure out why you’re here and how we can keep you from being here next year.’” Continue reading ‘Mercy House Executive Director Weighs in on Homelessness’
