The area commonly known in Ontario, Calif. as Tent City will no longer be a cost burden to the city’s general fund.
The $300,000 price tag associated with running the homeless encampment will now be funded and operated by the city’s Housing Authority, City Manager Greg Devereaux said.
A five-year agreement was reached between the Housing Authority and Mercy House. Mercy House is a nonprofit that has overseen Tent City, officially known as the Temporary Homeless Services Area, since its inception.
Currently, there are 60 people living at Tent City compared to last year’s 127 inhabitants. The Housing Authority will be responsible for all expenses for Tent City, said Brent Schultz, city Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization director.
It is up to the Housing Authority and Mercy House to continue to locate housing options for those living at Tent City. The goal, Schultz said, is “to find shelter for everybody.” Click here full story in the Contra Costa Times.
